About College of Charleston (South Carolina)

The College of Charleston, informally known as C of C, is a public university located in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, USA, the largest city and the county seat of Charleston County. In 1670, the city was known as Charles Towne, adopting its present name in 1783. Charleston is also known as The Holy City, due to the vast number of churches housed within its limits and it is the second most populated city in South Carolina, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 120 000 inhabitants.

The College of Charleston was founded in 1770, and it is the oldest college in South Carolina and the oldest municipal college in the country, as well as the 13th oldest institution of higher learning in the USA. It is said that the College was founded to `encourage and institute youth in the several branches of liberal education`.

After it became a state supported institution, in 1970, the size, as well as the faculty and student body of College of Charleston expanded significantly, transforming from a small regional college, having only 400 students, into a national master's level university, with an enrollment estimated at a number of 11 000 graduate and undergraduate students.

The athletic teams from College of Charleston are known as the College of Charleston Cougars, who compete in the NCAA Division I Southern Conference. The institution does not have a football team, but its athletic program in men's basketball is well-known. The men's basketball team from Charleston has won the NAIA national title in 1983, participating 4 times in the NCAA Tournament, in '94, '97, '98 and '99, led by the renowned, former head coach, John Kresse.

The Charleston Cougars athletic teams have also experienced victory in other sports fields, than basketball, in the past years, including in baseball and softball, as well as in men's soccer, women's volleyball, men's and women's swimming and diving, including in other several sports areas.
